Everywhere from the North to the South there are unforgettable discoveries to be made and Thailand offers something for every type of traveler. From the misty valleys of Mae Hong Son to the limestone islands of the Andaman Sea, from the shopping malls and the nightlife of Bangkok to the picturesque villages and markets along the Mekong River, the many facets of this beautiful country never fail to impress.
The country has a remarkable history. A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as 'Siam' until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country which never has been colonized by a European power. It is now a constitutional monarchy in which the king takes a discreet but prominent central role both as the head of state and as a topmost guardian of the religion.
Thailand enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons: hot and dry from February to May (average temperature 34 degrees Celsius and 75% humidity); rainy with lots of sunshine from June to October (average temperature around 29 degrees Celsius and 87% humidity); and cool from November to January (with temperatures ranging from 32 degrees Celsius to sub-20 degrees Celsius with a marked drop in humidity).
